OGMP 2.0 at 5: Advancing methane measurement and mitigation

Oil and gas facility

Five years ago, UNEP’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 set out to transform the oil and gas sector by offering a path to reduce methane emissions through better data.

Now, OGMP 2.0 is the global standard for measurement-based emissions reporting and mitigation, with roughly 45 per cent of global production in scope. As data quality improves across the sector, OGMP 2.0 members are reporting success in uncovering and mitigating emissions.

As we celebrate OGMP 2.0’s fifth anniversary, we reflect on the collective progress made by the companies and governments committed to reducing methane emissions across the sector. The partnership has grown into a vibrant, global community—enhancing emissions transparency, forging collaborations and accelerating the transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

At this milestone, we celebrate how far we’ve advanced collective action and urge others to join us for the critical years ahead.

OGMP 2.0’s first five years, at a glance:

  • OGMP 2.0 framework now forms the basis of the methane regulation in the world’s largest buying market, the European Union, while informing policymakers around the world.
  • OGMP 2.0 now encompasses the vast majority of imports to other major buying markets including Japan and South Korea, with 87 and 92 per cent of supply chains covered respectively.
  • Nearly a third of global oil and gas production is, or soon will be, reporting at Gold Standard, positioning a large portion of the global industry to effectively measure and mitigate emissions.
  • The goal of more accurate measurements is not just data collection. It is emissions reduction—and it’s working. As member companies measure their emissions, they mitigate them.
  • OGMP 2.0 is global, diverse and growing—and with it, its ability to drive action at a global scale. The partnership has grown to over 155 member companies, spanning 90 countries and covering roughly 45 per cent of global oil and gas production.
  • Through OGMP 2.0, the tools the oil and gas sector needs to cut methane are available now. The rest of the industry must join this collective effort to turn pledges into action.
